Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,
As chaos and drama unfolded with the tabling of women’s reservation bills in the Rajya Sabha, a question beset my mind. We continue to adopt an old traditional way of marriages, where, in many cases, parents prefer their son-in-law to be aged 10 years or more than their daughter. Research finding shows, female lives 4-5 years longer than their male counterpart. This means that wife must live a widow life and take the household responsibilities for about 15 years.

Question:
1. Does this conform the reason behind our society witnessing large no of widows?
2. Can we call this untold misery a violation of women’s right?
3. Is their denial to their parental decision a clear sign of resistance that they face even today?
